Why a solution format
Some protocols call for a compound already in solution — either because reconstitution introduces variability the study is trying to exclude, or because the endpoint involves surface application where a metered volume is more reproducible than a pipetted one.
What's typically measured
Work with topical formats commonly records applied volume, application site and contact time alongside the usual endpoints, since delivery variables affect how much compound reaches the target compartment.
Handling considerations
Solutions are less stable than dry powder. Protocols generally fix a working period after first use and discard the remainder rather than assuming the concentration has held.

- A pump calibrated to deliver a fixed volume per actuation, so applied quantity is reproducible without separate measurement.
- Carrier
- The solvent system a compound is dissolved in; it determines stability and how the compound behaves on the application surface.
- Actuation
- One full depression of the pump. Priming actuations are discarded because early strokes deliver an inconsistent volume.
Handling and storage
Prime a new bottle by discarding the first few actuations into waste, and record the actuation count rather than an estimated volume. Store upright to keep the dip tube submerged, and note that a solution has a shorter working life than the equivalent lyophilized powder.
